Stoneware is an ancient, dense pottery that is known for its aesthetic and practical qualities. It can be used as crocks, tableware, flowerpots, or many other daily uses around the home. Stoneware differs from other potteries like earthenware or porcelain in its clay content, its firing process, and its non-porous nature!
Stoneware was first used thousands of years ago, and came into its own in the early United States, descended from a tradition that started in Germany in the 1400s. with artisans in cities like Waldenburg who created everything from tankers to crocks that were famous all over for their artistry.
The art came into its own in early America during its halcyon Antebellum period. Stoneware is known for
-Low water content
-Heavy, dense, and hard to break pottery design
Stoneware is only partially vitrified or turned to glass, which makes it hard to scratch or dent. Unfortunately many Americans have turned to plastics in their home, which may represent a health danger and certainly lack the aesthetics of stoneware, introducing ugliness into the home. Stoneware is fired at up to 2381° F (1305° C). This high heat ensures the stoneware is largely waterproof and can be used to store items that you wouldn't want to put in plastic.
So we've covered the history of the home- now let's talk about some common uses of stoneware to make your home and house beautiful!
